New research has found that ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is associated with elevated creativity, and that this creative edge may arise from a stronger tendency for the mind to wander.

Presented at the ECNP congress in Amsterdam, the study is the first to explain how ADHD traits, creativity, and mind wandering interact, based on two separate participant groups.

Lead researcher Han Fang, from Radboud University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, described the study design: two independent samples were analyzed—one coordinated by the ECNP group and another drawn from a UK cohort. In total, 750 participants completed assessments. Analyzing two independent samples increases confidence in the reliability of the results.

Both groups showed typical ADHD features, including inattention, impulsivity, and frequent shifts in focus away from tasks. Participants with stronger ADHD symptoms also reported higher levels of mind wandering.

The results showed that participants who exhibited more ADHD-related traits—such as inattentiveness, impulsivity, or hyperactivity—scored higher on creative achievement in both samples. Importantly, deliberate mind wandering was particularly associated with greater creativity among people with ADHD, suggesting that intentional mental drifting helps generate original ideas.

These findings have potential clinical and educational implications. For psychoeducation, targeted programs could teach people with ADHD to recognize and direct their spontaneous thoughts into structured creative outlets, helping them translate fleeting ideas into productive outcomes. For treatment, ADHD-specific mindfulness and cognitive training approaches might aim to reduce unhelpful spontaneous mind wandering or convert it into more deliberate forms, potentially reducing functional impairment while preserving creative strengths.

The researchers emphasized that this is an initial investigation of the link between ADHD, creativity, and the types of mind wandering, and that further studies are needed to replicate and refine these findings.

Lesch, Professor of Molecular Psychiatry at the University of Würzburg, highlighted that mind wandering can serve as a key resource supporting the exceptional creativity often seen in high-functioning individuals with ADHD, making their perspective uniquely valuable in many societal and scientific contexts.
