Social media platforms shape public perceptions of neurodevelopmental conditions by offering spaces for interaction, information exchange, and peer support. These platforms can foster connections among autistic individuals and provide unique insights into their diverse perspectives and lived experiences. Yet, systematic knowledge about autism-related content on Reddit has been limited.
This study analyzed 740,042 autism-related posts collected from multiple Reddit communities, applying advanced natural language processing and topic modeling to identify the main subjects of discussion and to explore lived experiences shared online. Across the largest general autism forum and multiple specialized subreddits, converging themes included difficulties in social relationships, stimming and repetitive behaviors, sensory sensitivities, emotional responses to diagnosis, intervention-related concerns, and everyday coping strategies.
The findings were interpreted in light of clinical categories such as social communication differences and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior while also incorporating the perspectives of autistic communities that view these characteristics as differences—not deficits. Many reported challenges were linked to societal expectations and the pressure to mask neurodivergent traits. Overall, the study provides a comprehensive overview of key topics in autism-related social media content and offers practical insights into why autistic individuals engage on these platforms and what they seek from online communities.
