Introduction
Sedentary behavior has been implicated in mood disorders and cardiometabolic disease, but its relationship with dementia is less clear. This study examined associations between mentally passive (for example, TV viewing) and mentally active (for example, office work) sedentary behaviors and incident dementia, and modeled how replacing passive sitting with mentally active sitting or physical activity could affect dementia risk.
Methods
The analysis used data from the Swedish National March Cohort, including 20,811 adults aged 35–64 at baseline in 1997. Incident dementia was identified through national patient and death registers through 2016. Self-reported measures captured passive and mentally active sedentary behaviors and physical activity. The team applied single, partition, and substitution Cox proportional hazards models, adjusting for confounders; analyses were completed in 2025.
Results
