Music often carries clear emotional signals—through melody, tempo, harmony, and dynamics—making it an effective window into how people, including young children, detect and respond to feelings.
Previous research has shown that recognition of emotion in music improves across early and middle childhood. This study extends that literature by focusing on preschool-aged children and examining how individual differences in callous-unemotional traits relate to music emotion recognition.

Researchers from the Department of Psychology in the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Arts & Sciences tested 144 children from the Philadelphia area, ages 3 to 5, using short five-second musical clips designed to convey happiness, sadness, calmness, or fear. Children were asked to match the emotional tone of each clip to a corresponding facial expression.
Overall, performance exceeded chance levels: children reliably matched emotional music to the correct facial expressions, and accuracy improved between ages three and five. High-arousal emotions—happiness and fear—showed particularly strong recognition, while recognition for calmer or more subtly valenced music was more challenging.
When the researchers examined parent-reported callous-unemotional traits, they found that higher trait scores were linked to poorer accuracy in recognizing musical emotions overall, especially for positively valenced clips. Importantly, the ability to recognize fearful music did not decline among those children, suggesting a preserved sensitivity to certain emotional cues in music even when other emotion-recognition skills are reduced.
These results appear in Child Development.
“We show that children are good at matching expressive faces to emotionally evocative music even at age three,” says Associate Professor Rebecca Waller, co-senior author. “This highlights music’s value for emotion socialization and for teaching social skills, particularly for children who may be developing verbal ways to express feelings.”
This is the first published study to directly examine whether preschool children with higher callous-unemotional traits have difficulty recognizing emotion in music, according to Waller.
Yael Paz, a postdoctoral fellow in the EDEN Lab and co-first author, together with co-first author Sydney Sun (a former Penn undergraduate), point out an intriguing contrast: prior work has found that children with higher callous-unemotional traits struggle more to identify distress from facial expressions, yet in this study their recognition of fear in music remained intact. That pattern suggests music may offer a distinct and useful route for conveying certain emotions.
The authors caution that the current sample was a community group with generally low overall levels of callous-unemotional traits. They recommend that future research replicate these results in clinical samples or groups with higher trait levels to see whether patterns hold.
Waller and colleagues also note open questions about what factors—genetic, environmental, or experiential—drive individual differences in music-based emotion recognition, and whether musical interventions could be developed to improve emotional understanding and social competence.
“We’re excited to continue using music both to probe underlying mechanisms of emotion recognition and as a potential target for interventions,” Waller says. “Because music can be highly evocative, it may be especially beneficial for children who have difficulty reading social cues.”

Music offers a powerful and efficient way to study emotion recognition, yet evidence has been mixed about how proficient young children are at detecting emotions conveyed by music.
There is also limited knowledge about how music emotion recognition relates to callous-unemotional traits, which are associated with increased risk for externalizing problems.
This study evaluated 144 children aged 3–5 years (47.9% female; 34.0% from minoritized racial/ethnic backgrounds) on a music recognition task using clips that conveyed happiness, sadness, calmness, or fear.
Children performed above chance, especially for high-arousal emotions like happiness and fear, and accuracy improved from age three to five.
Children rated higher on callous-unemotional traits showed diminished emotion recognition overall, particularly for positively valenced music.
These findings highlight music’s potential to support emotion recognition and social competence during early development.
