Erratic Maternal Care Induces Avoidant-Like Attachment Deficits in a Mouse Model of Early Life Adversity
Attachment theory provides a clinical framework for understanding how early-life caregiving shapes emotional and behavioral trajectories. Attachment styles—secure or insecure (including anxious, avoidant, or disorganized)—form during sensitive developmental windows in response to caregivers’ ability to meet offspring needs consistently. Higher rates of insecure attachment are observed in high-risk populations and are associated with a wide range of negative health outcomes across the lifespan. Despite its importance, the neural mechanisms underlying attachment remain incompletely understood.
Previous work in rats showed that limited bedding and nesting impairs maternal care and is linked to increased pup corticosterone and abnormal attachment. This new study applied a similar limited-bedding (LB) paradigm to mice and used continuous home-cage monitoring to document how maternal care fragmentation relates to attachment-like behaviors. The researchers confirmed increased maternal fragmentation in LB conditions and found that this abnormal care correlated with elevated corticosterone by postnatal day seven and with a persistent reduction in growth rate.
