“Feel-good films” are often dismissed by professional critics as sentimental or lacking in intellectual substance. Yet audiences repeatedly seek out these films precisely because of the emotional comfort they provide. For the first time, researchers have examined this popular film category in depth to understand what makes such movies feel good.

A recent study from the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics explores which films viewers regard as prototypical feel-good movies and which formal and content-related features generate their positive emotional impact.

About 450 participants from Germany, Austria, and the German-speaking regions of Belgium and Switzerland took part in the study. Their responses point to romantic comedies—especially those blended with moments of drama—as having particularly strong potential to lift viewers’ moods.

Among the titles participants most often named as exemplary feel-good films were Love Actually, Pretty Woman, Amélie, and The Intouchables, suggesting a cross-cultural recognition of certain narrative patterns and tonal qualities.

The study’s results reveal which storytelling elements and formal devices commonly lead audiences to experience a film as feel-good. These elements include humor, a conventionally happy ending, recurring plot motifs, and a set of recognizable character types.

“In addition to an element of humor and the classic happy ending, feel-good films can be identified by certain recurring plot patterns and characters,” explains study leader and first author Keyvan Sarkhosh. “Often these involve outsiders in search of true love, who have to prove themselves and fight against adverse circumstances, and who eventually find their role in the community.”

While romance and comedy are central, participants also emphasized that effective feel-good films often incorporate dramatic moments. These emotionally intense episodes create contrast: they deepen viewers’ engagement and make the eventual uplift feel more earned. At the same time, many of the films are set in environments that resemble fairy-tale worlds—stylized, slightly idealized settings that contribute to a sense of lightness and escapism.

Taken together, these elements—humor, romantic arcs, relatable outsiders, conflict and resolution, dramatic tension, and a lightly fantastical setting—constitute the typical feel-good film experience. Viewers reported seeking out these films primarily as a means to relax and to improve their mood, underlining the role of cinema as a deliberate form of emotional self-care.

Importantly, many participants acknowledged that feel-good films can be sentimental without lapsing into kitsch; they stressed that craftsmanship and technical quality play a central role in how the films are perceived. This audience perspective contrasts with the frequently dismissive attitude taken by some professional critics, showing that the genre label carries positive connotations for many viewers.

In film criticism, “feel-good films” are widely dismissed as intellectually undemanding sentimental entertainment. This study approaches the topic from the audience’s perspective, identifying the key characteristics, emotional effects, and aesthetic qualities that viewers associate with feel-good cinema.

Although the feel-good film may not qualify as an independent, strictly defined genre, the research shows it is far more than a vague label. Romantic comedies that incorporate significant dramatic elements emerged as the most prototypical feel-good films. Participants highlighted fairy-tale likeness and a perceived lightness of tone as core attributes, while also noting that emotional trajectories typically include serious conflicts that render the finale emotionally moving.

The study further indicates that audience preferences for feel-good films vary substantially by demographic factors such as gender and age, suggesting diverse motivations and differing expectations when viewers choose films to boost mood or unwind.

Overall, this research sheds light on why certain films reliably trigger feelings of warmth, comfort, and uplift. By mapping the formal and narrative building blocks of the feel-good film, the study provides a clearer vocabulary for understanding a popular and emotionally significant strand of contemporary cinema.
