A new study presented at the SLEEP 2026 annual meeting reports that irregular sleep—variability in both timing and duration—is linked to lower receptive vocabulary and visuospatial memory scores in preschool children, even when total sleep duration is taken into account.

The study found that greater variability in sleep midpoint correlated with lower receptive vocabulary scores. Greater variability in sleep duration and higher social jet lag were also tied to weaker vocabulary outcomes. For visuospatial memory, performance declined with increased variability in sleep midpoint and with greater social jet lag, but it was not related to variability in sleep duration. Executive attention showed no significant links to sleep variability measures.

Across the assessment period, children’s night-to-night sleep duration varied by about 60 minutes on average, while sleep midpoint shifted by roughly 32 minutes. These patterns of inconsistency were associated with measurable declines in verbal and memory task performance.

“Children with more irregular sleep schedules tended to perform worse on verbal and memory tasks, even after controlling for total sleep time,” said lead author Karolina Rusin, a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. “These results underscore that sleep regularity—not only duration—matters for early brain development.”

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine emphasizes that healthy sleep involves sufficient duration, good quality, appropriate timing, and consistent schedules without ongoing disturbances. The AASM recommends that preschool-age children (3–5 years) regularly get 10–13 hours of sleep to support optimal health and development.

In this study of 379 preschool children (mean age 4.3 years), sleep was measured using actigraphy. Researchers calculated measures of regularity including the individual standard deviation of sleep midpoint, the individual standard deviation of sleep duration, and social jet lag. Cognitive outcomes were measured with established tasks: receptive vocabulary assessed by the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (n=322), visuospatial memory measured via a memory grid task (n=62), and executive attention evaluated with a preschool-adapted flanker task (n=60).

Rusin noted that the lack of an observed relationship between sleep variability and executive attention was unexpected. This nuance indicates that irregular sleep does not affect all cognitive abilities equally, and some domains may be more resilient or influenced by different sleep features.

“The absence of a link with executive attention suggests that not all cognitive outcomes are equally sensitive to sleep variability,” Rusin said. “Further research is needed to clarify how sleep regularity affects different cognitive domains across ages and populations.”
