As people attempt to recall past events, their brains rapidly scan stored information to identify the relevant memory. Many older adults, however, report greater difficulty doing this accurately and quickly.
In a review published in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences on February 11, researchers propose a clear explanation for these age-related differences in memory retrieval: older adults’ brains accumulate more knowledge and form richer memory representations, which increases the amount of material that must be navigated when trying to access a particular memory.
The review, authored by Tarek Amer (Columbia University and Harvard University), Jordana Wynn (Harvard University), and Lynn Hasher (University of Toronto), synthesizes findings from behavioral experiments and neuroimaging studies. Together, these studies indicate that older adults frequently retrieve irrelevant or competing memories when attempting to recall a target item, and they show reduced ability to suppress information that is no longer pertinent.
Specifically, the authors highlight two related patterns observed across studies: an increased tendency to bind contextual details and prior associations to new memories, and a greater reliance on previously learned knowledge when completing cognitive tasks. These tendencies create denser, more interwoven memory traces. While that richness can complicate the search for a single item, it also reflects a broader, experience-rich database that older adults can draw upon.
Behavioral evidence shows that, during retrieval, older adults often bring up additional memories that are not relevant to the current cue. Neuroimaging work complements these findings by suggesting that older brains may activate larger or more overlapping networks of information during search and recall. The result can be slower or less precise retrieval because the brain must resolve more competing information to isolate the desired memory.
Importantly, the researchers do not frame this accumulation of knowledge as purely negative. The review emphasizes circumstances in which enriched memories serve as an advantage. For example, older adults frequently demonstrate preserved or even enhanced creative problem solving in contexts where broad associations and a diverse knowledge base help generate novel ideas. Similarly, decision-making may benefit from having a richer store of past experiences to inform judgments and choices.
“Evidence suggests that older adults show preserved, and at times enhanced, creativity as a function of enriched memories,” the authors write. They argue that the increased binding of details and the richer encodings characteristic of older memory systems can be a resource as well as a challenge.

From a practical standpoint, the review suggests opportunities for interventions and strategies that could make memory retrieval easier for older adults. If dense, richly connected representations are part of normal aging, then training and environmental supports might focus on helping individuals reduce interference, strengthen retrieval cues, or leverage their existing knowledge more effectively. The authors note the possibility that the same properties leading to interference—greater binding and richer encodings—could be harnessed to improve learning and recall when methods explicitly build on prior knowledge.
The review underlines the importance of continued research into cognitive aging. Better understanding the balance between the costs and benefits of accumulated knowledge could inform therapies, cognitive training programs, and everyday strategies that help older adults navigate memory challenges while making the most of their experience.
