How Depression Impairs Learning to Avoid Negative Outcomes

Background: Much prior work has shown that depression can alter how people pursue rewards, reducing motivation and sensitivity to positive outcomes. Less clear, however, is how depressive symptoms influence the complementary process of learning to avoid nonrewarding or aversive events. Understanding whether depression impacts avoidance learning has implications for therapies, daily decision-making, and models of how mood shapes behavior.

To address this question, Ryan Tomm and colleagues at the University of British Columbia designed a human behavioral task adapted from rodent avoidance paradigms and reported their findings in eNeuro. The research team intentionally combined expertise from preclinical, cognitive, and clinical neuroscience to better bridge laboratory models and human behavior.

In the task, participants viewed visual cues on a screen that signaled the upcoming presentation of aversive sounds. They could prevent those sounds by either making an active response or by withholding a response, depending on the cue. This design allowed the investigators to distinguish learning to perform an action to avoid an outcome from learning to avoid simply by not acting, and to track performance across the learning process.

The study sample included 465 volunteers whose depressive symptoms ranged from low to severe. Analyses showed that higher symptom severity was associated with difficulty during the initial learning phase when participants needed to acquire an active avoidance response. Importantly, once participants with elevated depressive symptoms acquired the avoidance skill, their rates of successful avoidance were comparable to those of participants with lower symptom levels.

These results suggest a more nuanced view of how depression affects behavior: depressive symptoms may slow or impair the learning of active strategies for avoiding negative outcomes, without necessarily compromising the capacity to carry out those strategies once learned. This distinction matters for treatments and behavioral interventions, which often aim to teach or reinforce adaptive avoidance or coping strategies.

“What we still don’t know,” says Tomm, “is how depressive symptoms affect avoidance when people continue to learn after being proficient at an avoidance task, or in more complex situations where the best way to avoid something is unclear.” The team plans to pursue follow-up studies that address ongoing learning, ambiguous choices, and longer-term dynamics of avoidance in people with depressive symptoms.

By identifying a selective deficit in the acquisition phase of avoidance learning, this work helps clarify one pathway by which depression can shape behavior. It also provides a framework for future studies that aim to map neural mechanisms, evaluate clinical relevance, and design interventions that support learning of adaptive avoidance strategies in people affected by depression.
