Children’s ability to interpret other people’s emotions is fundamental to social development. Yet many young children find it challenging to infer adults’ feelings from facial cues alone. This research identifies the developmental mechanisms behind that difficulty by examining how perceptual and conceptual processes change between ages five and ten.

Recognizing emotions helps children form relationships, respond appropriately in social situations, and develop empathy. Human abilities to reason about what others may be feeling develop across childhood and adolescence, but the mechanisms behind this growth are not fully understood. This series of studies, conducted with a single sample of 5- to 10-year-old children, examines how spontaneous perceptual discrimination of facial configurations and activation of conceptual emotion knowledge become integrated over development.
Perceptual discrimination was measured with EEG frequency tagging, conceptual knowledge assessed through similarity-rating tasks, and behavioral understanding evaluated with sorting and matching exercises. Representational similarity analysis was used to test how perceptual and conceptual measures predict behavioral judgments. The studies show that perceptual discrimination of typical facial expressions appears by preschool age but its predictive power declines with age, while reliance on conceptual knowledge increases as children grow and accumulate social experience.
