Study design and manipulation
Graduate student Soren Wainio-Theberge and professor Jorge Armony recruited nearly 200 participants from the McGill community. After initial computer-based assessments, participants were asked to complete a task on a tablet under the cover story of testing a mobile application.
To nudge posture without drawing attention to it, the tablet was either placed on an adjustable stand on a higher table—encouraging an upright seated position—or laid flat on a lowered desk—encouraging a more hunched posture. Participants completed a risk-taking challenge in which they could inflate a virtual balloon to earn points but risked losing accumulated rewards if the balloon burst.
Those positioned to sit upright tended to take larger but more calculated risks, earning greater rewards without evidence of impulsive or reckless behavior. Post-experiment interviews indicated most participants did not realize their posture had been manipulated, helping to rule out demand characteristics that have complicated earlier posture research.
In addition to behavioural outcomes, participants completed questionnaires. The upright group reported significantly higher feelings of pride, a positive self-conscious emotion associated with achievement and confidence.

Abstract
Manipulating posture implicitly through environmental constraints influences mood and risk-taking behaviour
Body posture provides feedback that can shape mood and behaviour: expansive poses can increase feelings of power, while contractive poses can reduce them. Much prior work relies on explicit, deliberate posture instructions, which raises concerns about experimental demand effects and reduces ecological validity.
This study created an incidental posture manipulation by configuring the environment so participants naturally adopted either an expansive (upright) or contractive (hunched) posture. The effects of this manipulation were measured on self-reported mood and on behaviour in a risk-taking task.
Results show the manipulation reliably increased risk-taking on the balloon analogue risk task, an effect that remained after accounting for discomfort or awareness of the manipulation. Posture effects on reported pride were partially mediated by measured neck angle, while risk-taking effects were influenced by posture and momentary mood.
These findings suggest that, beyond conscious “power posing,” incidental environmental factors that affect posture—such as desk setups or ergonomic choices—may have subtle but continuous effects on mood and decision-making in everyday life.
