People are more easily persuaded by others who are similar to them in appearance, behavior, or beliefs. This research asks whether that persuasive effect also applies to how people sound. The authors measure vocal similarity using machine learning tools that capture timbre through mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), producing an objective index of how closely a spokesperson’s voice matches a listener’s.
