Early language problems can set the stage for later social and emotional difficulties. A new collaborative study from Florida Atlantic University and Aarhus University (Denmark) tested whether unsupervised, solitary screen time in early childhood makes it more likely that language difficulties will lead to socioemotional problems.
Published in Research on Child and Adolescent Psychopathology, the study reports that links from weak communication skills and restricted productive vocabulary to later adjustment problems were especially pronounced among preschool- and kindergarten-aged children whose parents reported that the child averaged at least 10 to 30 minutes per day of solitary screen time across a typical week.

The study followed 546 children (264 girls, 282 boys), ages 4–5, across 24 population-based childcare centers in 13 municipalities in Denmark. Teachers assessed each child’s emotional and conduct difficulties twice over a six-month period within a single school year. At the study’s start, standardized tests measured children’s communication skills and productive vocabulary, while parents reported the amount of time children spent alone using handheld devices or watching television (excluding time shared with an adult).
Consistent with prior research, low oral language ability predicted later adjustment problems. Across the six months, both weak communication skills and high levels of solitary screen time independently predicted an increase in emotional difficulties. Crucially, solitary screen time also interacted with language problems to predict greater increases in conduct issues—this interaction was strongest for children reported to have above-average solitary screen exposure.
“Unsupervised screen time forecloses opportunities for social engagement that might mitigate the behavioral risks that follow from language problems,” said Brett Laursen, Ph.D., senior author and professor of psychology at FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science.
Laursen explained the results with an opportunity-cost framework: children have a limited number of free hours each day, and every hour spent alone with a device is an hour not spent practicing conversational turns, emotional regulation, compromise, or sharing—skills essential for forming friendships and managing behavior.
Lead author Molly Selover, an FAU doctoral student, emphasized that young children acquire language primarily through interactive, in-person exchanges—not passive viewing. “For children with limited language skills, screens are unlikely to help solve adaptive challenges and may, in fact, make them worse,” she said.
The researchers note broader patterns of high screen use among young children. The World Health Organization recommends no more than one hour per day for ages 2–5, yet many households exceed that. U.S. estimates show that roughly half of young children spend more than two hours per weekday on screens, with higher usage on weekends. Both the content viewed and adult supervision make a difference.
Professional guidance—for example from the American Psychological Association—encourages limiting screen time for 2–5 year-olds to around one hour daily and stresses co-viewing and interaction rather than using screens as passive babysitters. The quality of screen content is important and may matter more than sheer minutes viewed.
Children left to choose often pick fast-paced, highly stimulating content that can be age-inappropriate. The study’s authors caution that electronic media is increasingly central to the home learning environment; many children now spend more time with screens than with books, toys, or peers. For children who are already vulnerable, solitary screen time is not harmless—it can actively impede emotional and behavioral development.
The authors acknowledge these findings may be uncomfortable in a world where screens are ubiquitous, but they urge parents and caregivers to monitor how young children use devices and to prioritize shared, interactive screen experiences when screens are used.

Abstract
Solitary Screen Time Exacerbates Later Socioemotional Problems in Young Children with Oral Language Difficulties
Extensive evidence links early oral language difficulties to later adjustment challenges, yet less is known about environmental factors that make these outcomes worse. This study tested whether unsupervised solitary screen time amplifies longitudinal associations from low language skills to increased socioemotional problems.
Participants were 546 four- and five-year-olds (264 girls, 282 boys) attending 24 population-based childcare centers in 13 Danish municipalities. Teachers completed assessments of child adjustment difficulties (conduct and emotional problems) twice, roughly six months apart. At baseline, teachers measured communication skills and productive vocabulary, while parents reported the typical hours per week children spent viewing screens alone.
Findings showed that both solitary screen time and low communication skills predicted increases in emotional problems. Moreover, solitary screen time moderated the association between oral language problems and increases in conduct problems: among children with above-average solitary screen exposure, lower initial productive vocabulary and communication skills predicted greater rises in conduct problems over six months.
