The idiom “born with a silver spoon” captures the intuition that parental wealth influences outcomes. That is true to some extent, but this study emphasizes that inherited traits—especially cognitive ability—are a strong part of the explanation for where people end up in adulthood.

“The so-called ‘silver spoon’ is not as decisive as many assume. Home environment also reflects genetic influences,” says personality psychologist Petri Kajonius, lead author of the study published in Scientific Reports.

The analysis used data from the German TwinLife panel, which follows twins over time to separate genetic and environmental effects. The sample included roughly 880 individuals—about half identical twins and half fraternal twins—who were raised together in the same families.

Because identical twins share virtually all their genes, while fraternal twins share about half, the twin design permitted estimation of how much variation in IQ and SES is attributable to heredity versus shared upbringing.

IQ was measured at age 23, and SES indicators (education level, occupational status and income) were assessed at age 27, the period when many young adults have completed initial education and established early career positions. Results indicate that genetic factors explain most of the covariance between early-adult cognitive ability and subsequent socioeconomic outcomes.

“We already knew genetics matter,” Kajonius notes, “but these longitudinal results make clear how strongly inherited differences contribute to both intelligence and related socioeconomic trajectories.”

What does this mean for policy and parenting?

The study does not imply that interventions are pointless. Short-term supports and targeted programs can increase opportunities and improve immediate outcomes. However, the results caution that achieving persistent, long-term equalization of SES through generic policies may be challenging if genetic predispositions strongly constrain the range of possible outcomes.

For parents, these findings may reduce undue guilt about a child’s achievements. While parenting and enriched environments matter, the long-run influence of innate traits is substantial. For young people, the evidence may encourage emphasis on pursuing personal strengths and interests rather than solely chasing the highest possible socioeconomic status.

Limitations

The study did not control for parental IQ and SES directly, which can be important covariates in intergenerational analyses. Additionally, classic twin models can underrepresent genotype–environment interaction—how genetic potentials express differently across environments. Some portion of the estimated heritability (approximately up to 15 percentage points) could reflect such interactions rather than direct genetic effects alone.

Longitudinal associations between cognitive ability and socioeconomic status are partially genetic in nature

Cognitive ability (IQ) has been shown to predict future socioeconomic status. Yet there is limited longitudinal research on the genetic and environmental contributions to this association during emerging adulthood. Using the German TwinLife panel, this study examined how IQ at age 23 relates to SES at age 27 (NMZ = 228; NDZ−SAME SEX = 212), employing two measures of educational attainment and two measures of occupational status.

Cholesky decomposition models estimated IQ heritability at approximately 75%, with significant heritable components across SES outcomes. Genetic factors accounted for the majority of the IQ–SES association (69–98%), and genetic correlations between IQ and SES were larger than environmental correlations. These results highlight the need for researchers and policymakers to consider genetic influences alongside environmental factors when addressing young adults’ life outcomes.
