Interbrain synchrony is the coordinated timing of neural activity across people who are socially interacting—speaking, learning, singing, or collaborating. When brains tune to one another, it helps partners share attention, communicate more effectively, and strengthen emotional bonds.

Neural synchrony has been identified as an important mechanism for healthy parent–child bonding. Researchers in the UK tested whether this mechanism is affected when bilingual parents use a second language with their young children. Their findings, published in Frontiers in Cognition, suggest that the neural basis for connection remains intact across languages.

“Our results show that the brains of bilingual mothers and their children remain highly synchronized whether they interact in the mother’s native language or in an acquired second language,” said Dr. Efstratia Papoutselou, first author and research fellow at the University of Nottingham School of Medicine. “This indicates that using a second language does not disrupt the neural link that supports bonding and communication.”

Bilingual family life is common in many regions. For instance, the proportion of European households where more than one language is used rose substantially from 2014 to 2023. While bilingualism brings well-documented social, cognitive, and academic benefits, the study addressed a lingering concern: could speaking a non-native language reduce emotional closeness during demanding or emotional interactions?

Even highly proficient second-language speakers sometimes report feeling emotionally distant when not using their native tongue. They may speak more slowly, use more pauses, or hesitate—factors that could, in principle, alter parent–child dynamics. The current study directly tested whether those subjective feelings translate into measurable differences in brain-to-brain coupling during natural play.

Study design and methods

Fifteen UK families participated, each with a child aged three to four raised in a bilingual environment. For all mothers, English was an acquired second language at an advanced proficiency level. In the laboratory, mother–child dyads sat at a table with toys while both wore functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) caps, which measure changes in blood oxygenation as a proxy for neural activity.

Each pair completed three randomized conditions: natural play in the mother’s native language, natural play in English (the mother’s second language), and independent play separated by a screen. The naturalistic free-play paradigm was chosen to capture authentic interaction patterns in a controlled setting.

fNIRS recordings focused on the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and temporoparietal junction (TPJ), brain regions linked to social cognition, joint attention, and emotion regulation. The team compared the degree of neural synchrony across conditions to determine whether language context influenced brain-to-brain alignment.

Findings

Across dyads, neural synchrony was significantly higher during interactive play than in the independent play condition, confirming that shared engagement drives interbrain coupling. Synchrony was strongest in the prefrontal cortex and weaker in TPJ areas. Crucially, there was no meaningful difference in overall synchrony between native-language play and English play: bilingual mothers and their children maintained comparable neural alignment in both language contexts.

Exploratory analyses hinted at possible trends—such as slightly stronger child-directed synchrony during English play or age-related shifts in mother-directed synchrony—but these did not reach statistical significance in this sample.

Implications

The study suggests that bilingualism does not impair the neural foundations of parent–child bonding. For families who naturally use more than one language, these findings provide biological evidence that emotional attunement and shared attention can be preserved across languages. The results also highlight the value of studying linguistically diverse families in naturalistic settings and encourage further research into how language proficiency, interaction history, and behavior relate to neural synchrony.

Abstract

The Impact of Language Context on Inter-Brain Synchrony in Bilingual Families

Background:

Bilingualism is increasingly common in families, yet developmental neuroscience has historically underrepresented linguistically diverse households. Differences in how parents and children acquire languages—children may learn two languages simultaneously while parents acquire a societal language later—could affect communication and bonding when interactions occur in a second language.

Neural synchrony, the temporal alignment of brain activity between people, supports social connection, shared attention, and learning in early development. This study examined whether language choice alters neural synchrony in bilingual mother–child interactions.

Methods:

Using fNIRS hyperscanning, the study recorded brain activity from 15 bilingual mother–child dyads during naturalistic free play. Each dyad completed three conditions: collaborative play in the mother’s native language, collaborative play in English, and independent play. Activity from the prefrontal cortex and temporoparietal junction was analyzed to assess synchrony during these ecologically valid interactions.

Results:

Both native-language and English play produced significantly greater neural synchrony in the prefrontal cortex and TPJ compared to independent play.
