Aligning one’s choices with the norms and expectations of others is a central component of moral behavior. When values conflict, relying on intuitive preferences can be an adaptive way to navigate moral dilemmas. Although theorists have proposed that interoceptive signals influence moral intuition, empirical evidence has been scarce.

This research evaluates relationships between individual moral preferences and interoception using self-report measures, a heartbeat detection task, and resting-state fMRI. Two independent experiments show that participants’ interoceptive awareness and accuracy correlate with the degree to which their moral decisions match group consensus. Furthermore, the fractional occupancies of resting brain states involving the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and the precuneus mediate the association between interoceptive awareness and group-aligned moral preference.
