New research from Reichman University and collaborating Israeli institutions investigated psychological outcomes after the deadly Nova Festival attack.

On October 7, 2023, a terrorist attack at the Nova Festival tragically resulted in the deaths of nearly 400 people and left hundreds more physically and psychologically affected. Three weeks after the event, researchers conducted in-person assessments of 343 survivors, aged 18–64, to document their mental health symptoms and the psychoactive substances they had used before or during the festival.

PTSD and anxiety after exposure to war, terrorism, and mass-casualty events are major global mental health concerns. Yet direct human data on how traumatic memories form under the influence of psychoactive compounds are scarce, and most mechanistic knowledge comes from animal studies or controlled laboratory experiments rather than large, real-world events.

The Nova Festival provided an unusual naturalistic setting in which a large group of people experienced the same traumatic event while under the influence of different substances. The study compared self-reported anxiety and post-traumatic symptoms between survivors who had been using classic psychedelics, those who had used MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), and those who reported no psychedelic use.

Results showed that participants who consumed classic psychedelics during the festival had lower average anxiety scores and fewer post-traumatic symptoms overall. For example, the study reports an overall mean anxiety score of 1.90 across the full sample, which declined to 1.38 among those who had taken classic psychedelics. These associations remained statistically significant after adjusting for demographic and clinical variables, including prior psychiatric history and earlier psychedelic exposure.

Dr. Zohar Rubinstein of the Baruch Ivcher School of Psychology at Reichman University noted the unique opportunity the event provided: “This is a striking example of a simultaneous, large-scale traumatic exposure affecting thousands of people. Survivors’ cooperation allowed us to study early symptom emergence in a natural setting, offering important clinical insights.”

Clinical psychologist Einat Karp Barnir, who volunteered in a post-attack healing space, described how clinical impressions on the ground inspired the formal study. After speaking with many survivors, she observed that some people who had used certain substances appeared to have milder anxiety and fewer post-traumatic responses. Those observations, coupled with conflicting media reports, motivated the systematic investigation into substance type and subsequent psychological outcomes.

Professor Rany Abend added that the findings implicate brain systems engaged by classic psychedelics in the nexus between life-threatening experience, traumatic memory formation, and later psychological symptoms. The authors suggest that pharmacologic actions of classic psychedelics may modulate how traumatic memories are encoded and consolidated, potentially offering protective effects against the development of long-term PTSD and anxiety.

The study contributes real-world evidence to a growing body of literature on psychedelics and trauma. Nevertheless, the researchers stress caution: these observational findings do not recommend recreational or unsupervised psychedelic use. Instead, they point to mechanisms worth exploring in controlled clinical trials to determine whether supervised, integrated psychedelic-assisted interventions can safely and effectively reduce trauma-related symptoms.

Peri-traumatic consumption of classic psychedelics is associated with lower anxiety and post-traumatic responses 3 weeks after exposure

Emerging evidence suggests psychedelic compounds may have therapeutic potential for post-traumatic stress, but the mechanisms that underlie these effects are not yet clear. Clarifying how psychedelics affect traumatic memory formation could reveal therapeutic targets. In this study of 343 adult survivors of a single large-scale terrorist attack at a music festival, anxiety and post-traumatic symptoms were measured three weeks after exposure. Survivors who were under the influence of classic psychedelics during the attack reported significantly lower anxiety and post-traumatic symptoms compared with those who were under the influence of MDMA or who consumed no psychedelics. The protective association was stronger among participants who did not combine psychedelics with other recreational substances. These findings indicate that pharmacologic targets of classic psychedelics may modulate the formation of lasting traumatic memories and potentially reduce the risk of developing post-traumatic stress and anxiety responses, warranting further controlled investigation.
