Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem report that, when people concentrated on a visual task, they were less likely to notice negative spoken words than neutral ones. The findings shed light on how the brain decides which auditory inputs reach consciousness and which remain outside it.

Conscious experience plays a central role in behavior, but most neural processing happens outside awareness. Understanding how the mind selects information for consciousness is therefore central to cognitive theory. Prior work has leaned heavily on vision, but senses differ fundamentally—audition lacks foveation and cannot be instantaneously stopped—so generalizing is difficult. The present work examines affective prioritization in audition.

Across three experiments (two preregistered), 101 Hebrew-speaking adults performed a visual task while a stream of auditory pseudowords played in the background. Occasionally a meaningful word appeared. Using both objective and subjective measures of awareness, the authors found that neutral words were prioritized for conscious detection over negative words, regardless of task difficulty, intelligibility, and low-level acoustic features. These results challenge common intuitions and invite new theoretical reconciliation.
