Abstract

An individual participant data meta-analysis of how physical activity relates to affective well-being in daily life

Physical inactivity is a major public health concern. To leverage physical activity as a scalable health resource, we need a clearer picture of how activity and affective well-being (AWB) influence each other in everyday life. While laboratory and intervention studies indicate a link between exercise and AWB and suggest that AWB may shape activity behavior, results from real-world, digital-era assessments have been mixed.

This analysis assembled 67 datasets (representing 55.2% of eligible records) that together include 321,345 smartphone-based AWB ratings and nearly 1,000,000 hours of accelerometer-measured physical activity from 8,223 participants collected through December 2023. One- and two-stage individual participant data meta-analyses show that momentary AWB relates to both prior and subsequent short-term physical activity. Within individuals, activity is positively associated with energetic arousal, positive affect, and valence, and negatively associated with calmness. Effect sizes are comparable to other everyday activities, with energetic arousal showing the strongest relation to activity level. Some variability across individuals is partially explained by sociodemographic moderators, while between-person analyses link greater overall activity to more positive affective states.

These results underscore the practical importance of activity–AWB relations in daily life and provide a foundation for revising health behavior models and investigating the behavioral, physiological, and neural mechanisms that underlie these associations.
