How words can move the brain — and the body
A simple mark on a page, a viral meme, or a phrase overheard in a conversation can sometimes lead to powerful responses: from a change in opinion to hostile behavior. Psychologists, neuroscientists, linguists and philosophers are developing a theory of language understanding that explains how language can prime both mind and action.
Recent research shows that understanding language often engages the brain’s sensory, motor and emotional systems. According to simulation theory, simply reading or hearing words activates neural patterns that resemble those produced by actually experiencing what the words describe. In other words, language creates internal simulations that make imagined events feel more like real events — and that can make actions more likely.
Simulations are step one
Traditional views treat language as a system of words and rules that transmit abstract ideas. Simulation theory extends that view by explaining how ideas become action. The core proposal is that processing words draws on neural and behavioral systems used for action, perception and emotion. When you perceive language, your brain constructs simulations that mirror the sensory, motor and emotional states associated with the content of the words.
For example, when you read a line such as “The lovers held hands while they walked along the moonlit tropical beach,” your motor system simulates walking; your visual and auditory systems simulate sights and sounds of the beach; and your emotional system simulates the conveyed feelings. These internal simulations prime the motor system and motivate behavior in ways similar to actually being in the situation.
That is why certain labels or phrases can push people toward action. Language that repeatedly depicts a social group as threatening or immoral can trigger emotional simulations that increase hostility and lower inhibition, sometimes culminating in derogatory remarks or physical violence.
Evidence linking language to perception, action and emotion
Many experimental findings support simulation theory. Neuroimaging studies show that listening to action verbs like “lick,” “pick” and “kick” activates sectors of the motor cortex associated with the mouth, hand and leg, respectively. Reading sentences that describe visual scenes engages visual cortical areas that contribute to mental imagery. Manipulations that interfere with facial muscle movement — for example, using Botox to reduce brow furrowing — alter emotional responses and slow comprehension of sentences conveying anger. These results connect language comprehension with motor, sensory and emotional neural systems.
Additional behavioral evidence highlights subtle links between sound and feeling. In experiments comparing English word pairs that differ primarily in vowel sound — for example, “gleam” versus “glum” or “seek” versus “suck” — participants tended to rate the words containing an “eee” vowel as more positive two-thirds of the time. One explanation is that producing an “eee” sound recruits facial muscles used in smiling, subtly biasing mood and evaluation. When participants chewed gum to disrupt smiling muscles, the positivity bias for “eee” words was reduced, supporting a connection between articulation, facial muscle activation and emotional judgments. Similar patterns were observed in Mandarin, suggesting the phenomenon is not limited to English.
Practice through simulation
Simulations become faster and more automatic with repetition. When a word or concept is first encountered, constructing its simulation can be effortful. But repeated exposure — through conversation, social media, news or memes — rehearses the simulation and makes it quicker, more vivid and more readily retrievable. The echo chamber of repeated posts not only speeds simulation but can also shape its content: a neutral term can become emotionally charged by repeated negative framing.
Psycholinguist Dan Slobin argued that habitual speech patterns lead to habitual ways of thinking. The words and metaphors you hear provide a vocabulary for constructing mental simulations, and that vocabulary fosters predictable habits of mind. If language repeatedly highlights rare criminal behavior by a particular group, the repeated simulations can produce a distorted sense of threat.
Practice need not produce negative outcomes. Alternative framings and repeated exposure to other perspectives can generate different simulations. The same term can be simulated as threatening or as humanizing, depending on context and repetition. Because simulation evokes a sense of “being there,” it motivates actions aligned with the simulated state: simulating anger or fear promotes aggression and avoidance, while simulating compassion promotes helping and kindness.
Implications and responsibility
Language has real power because it recruits the very systems that govern perception, emotion and action. Scientific evidence suggests that hearing or reading certain words can prime neural and bodily states that make particular responses more likely. That insight places a responsibility on communicators and listeners alike: to employ language conscientiously and to critically evaluate repeated messages that shape our mental simulations.
