Children who grow up in disadvantaged neighborhoods — areas with higher crime, fewer community resources, and greater socioeconomic hardship — are at elevated risk for depression. New research led by faculty at Binghamton University, State University of New York, sheds light on one potential mechanism: neighborhood-level stress appears to blunt children’s neural responses to both positive and negative outcomes.

The research team included Professor of Psychology Brandon Gibb, graduate student Elana Israel, and former graduate students Cope Feurer and Aliona Tsypes. Their study focused on how neighborhood disadvantage relates to reward processing in children and whether that relation is amplified for those already at familial risk for depression.
“One of my interests is how neural reward processing relates to risk for depression. One thing that we know that impacts that is exposure to stress,” said Elana Israel. “Prior research has focused mainly on individual-level stress — personal traumas or interpersonal stress — but less attention has been paid to community-level stressors.”
To investigate these questions, the team studied more than 200 children ages 7–11. Parents were interviewed to determine whether they had a history of major depressive disorder. The researchers used each child’s ZIP code to derive neighborhood measures such as crime risk, socioeconomic deprivation, and indices like the Area Deprivation Index and Child Opportunity Index.
Children completed a simple monetary guessing task while researchers recorded brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG). The study focused on the reward positivity (RewP) event-related potential, a neural signal that reflects the brain’s response to gains and losses.
Across multiple neighborhood indices, higher levels of neighborhood disadvantage were linked with more blunted neural reactivity to both gains and losses — but this effect emerged primarily among children whose parents had a history of major depressive disorder. Children of parents without a depression history did not show the same pattern.
“When something good or bad happens to you, your brain responds, and we can measure that activity,” explained Professor Brandon Gibb. “How strongly you react to positive or negative events can influence risk for depression. What this study shows is that the context you live in — the ambient levels of stress around you — can shape those responses, even if the stressors aren’t experienced directly by the child.”
Gibb noted that prolonged exposure to stressful environments may teach children to down-regulate their emotions — not getting as excited by positive experiences and not reacting as strongly to negative ones. While this dampening can be adaptive in chronically stressful contexts, it may also reduce motivation and heighten vulnerability to depressive disorders in susceptible youth.
“We want children to be responsive to good things,” Gibb added. “Positive reactivity supports motivation and engagement. If that reaction is blunted, it may undermine a child’s drive to seek rewarding experiences.”
The research team has launched a follow-up study to track how children’s neural responses and depression risk may change after moving to new neighborhoods. They also plan to expand their work to adolescents and to examine social outcomes such as peer acceptance and rejection in addition to monetary rewards.
These findings highlight the importance of neighborhood characteristics for mental health. Addressing broader community conditions may be an important complement to individual-level interventions, since neighborhood stress can influence children’s emotional processing even without direct exposure to trauma.

Parental History of Major Depressive Disorder Moderates the Relation Between Neighborhood Disadvantage and Reward Responsiveness in Children
This study examined how census-derived measures of neighborhood disadvantage relate to children’s neural processing of reward outcomes and whether those relations are stronger among children at heightened risk due to parental history of major depressive disorder (MDD). Participants were 224 children aged 7–11 and their parent; parents either had a history of MDD or no lifetime history of depressive disorders. Reward outcome processing was measured via the reward positivity (RewP) event-related potential elicited during a monetary reward task. Neighborhood indices included the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), neighborhood crime risk, and the Child Opportunity Index (COI). Across these measures, greater neighborhood disadvantage was associated with more blunted neural reactivity to gain and loss feedback, but primarily among children with a parental history of MDD. These findings suggest that broader contextual stressors may shape how youth process reward outcomes, particularly in those already at elevated risk for depression, with implications for disorders involving reward dysfunction.
